QR Code Marketing Best Practices for Better Conversion
A QR code alone will not drive scans. Placement, size, contrast, and call-to-action text determine whether people notice your code and take action.
QR code marketing fails when the code is treated as an afterthought. A small, low-contrast code buried in a corner of a poster might look professional to the designer, but it will not get scanned. Following best practices for placement, design, and context dramatically improves scan rates.
Placement strategies start with the eye path. People scan QR codes with their phones, which means the code needs to be within easy reach and in a well-lit area. On posters, place the code at eye level or slightly below. On product packaging, put it on the front or top surface where it catches light. On table tents, center the code so it is visible from across the table.
Size and contrast are equally important. A QR code should be at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) on its smallest dimension for reliable scanning. Smaller codes work in some contexts but fail in low-resolution or print-quality situations. Contrast between the code and background should be high — black on white is the gold standard, but dark colors on light backgrounds also work well.
Call-to-action text is what separates a scanned code from an ignored one. A QR code without context is a mystery. Adding three to five words like "Scan for 20% off" or "Watch the demo" increases scan rates by 300% or more. The CTA should be specific and benefit-oriented, not generic like "Scan here."
Testing and optimization should be continuous. Print a test batch and scan the codes with multiple phone models and camera apps. Check that the landing page loads quickly on mobile and that the next step is obvious. Run A/B tests with different CTAs, placements, and code sizes to find what works best for your specific audience.
